A Shower for Baby Abeni

One of my dearest friends, Nefertiti is expecting a Baby Girl, Abeni, in the next few weeks!! How exciting!! Abeni is an African name meaning "girl prayed for"... completely accurate in her case :)

Friends to the rescue! Mia, Lorie, and I took on the task of hosting the baby shower and while it was hectic to fit planning into our schedules, it was definitely a task our hearts enjoyed.

The theme was a Jungle Baby Shower. I have to admit that I fell in love with the little Monkey right away! I just knew she had to be the star of the cookies!

Each person got a cookie in a celophane baggie with a contrasting printable as the Shower favours. The labels said "Celebrating Abeni. Love, Nef & Jesse" *oops* I forgot to take a picture of the packaged favours.

Here's the themed inspirtation piece
I flooded the cookies and outlined the monkeys

After letting the outline dry, each monkey got a face and a smile!

Finished Monkeys! Don't they look like they're having a grande time!?

Accent cookies to round out the collection.

Nef and Jesse (the Dad) were showered with love and gifts and hopefully had a fantastic time!

I know we all cannot wait until baby Abeni makes her debut!

Mickey and Minnie Mouse Party Favors

A close friend recently threw a 1st birthday party for her daughter. The theme was the Mickey Mouse Club House.

After thinking a while, we decided that a smaller cookie would be best for giveaways and as all the little ones would love them anyways, simpler was better when it came to the design!

Using Mickey Mouse's iconic red trousers and yellow buttons for inspiration along with dainty Minnie Mouse's pink polka dot dress (I had a stuffed Minnie Mouse doll that wore that dress), I started looking for an appropriate cookie cutter.

While I have quite a collection of cutters, nothing seemed perfect.

What a dilemma...

Until.... Mr. T free-handed the classic Mickey Mouse head onto some thin cardboard and then we cut it out to use as a template.

It gave us a custom shape but of course meant cutting out each cookie with a knife... the things we do for our Loved Ones :)

We put down the black top half of each cookie first, waited about 30 minutes, and then filled out the bottom of each cookie making an equal amount of Mickey's and Minnie's.

Ta-Da!!

Chinese themed Quinceanera

Quinceanera's are the hispanic counter-part to the american Sweet 16. At the age of 15 a young lady becomes a woman. Part of this is generally a huge party.

This 'quince' had a Chinese theme.

Each cookie was double sided - bright chinese red on each side. Golden 15 characters (Mandarin) on one side and beautiful bamboo on the other side.

Gorgeous! So proud of my Chinese heritage and being able to share it with others.

Lambda Pi Chi Collection

A former classmate asked me to help her celebrate the 13th Anniversary of her becoming a proud member of Lambda Pi Chi Sorority. It was a big deal because she and her line sisters were now 'teenagers'.

This collection was a true treat since the sorority colors are so vibrant and their mascott, the Butterfly, is beautiful.

Happy Anniversary, Ladies!

Mad Hatter Tea Party - Alice in Wonderland

Recently a lovie Birthday girl came to me with a very specific request of cookies inspired by Alice in Wonderland. She wanted something that could be served at a Mad Hatter Tea Party.

Creating these cookies took me back to one of my favorite scenes from the cartoon movie where Alice has to nibble on random goodies to adjust her size.

I hope Liz had a great party! *pinkies up!!*

Delta Sigma Theta

My beloved 'sister' Elizabeth asked me to make these cookies for her Chapter meeting. She is a proud member of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc.

It was a HUGE order and of course I was super nervous because I always want to make Elizabeth proud :)

The hand configuration is the way that the members represent for the sorority (seen a lot in pictures of the members), their flower is the African Violet, and their animal is the Elephant.

Definitely a success if I do say so myself! The hands were probably the most tedious part but I am definitely proud of them.

Most importantly.... Elizabeth LOVED them!

*happy dance*

Jayda Turns 2!

The cutest little girl name Jayda used to live in the same complex as Mr. T for a while. She moved away about a year ago and by chance her Mom and Mr. T ran into each other the other day. Jayda's mom ordered some cookies for her birthday party!

A special set of big cookies for the birthday girl:

And some little snack packs as party favors:

So adorable... the cookies and the 2 year old!

Cancer Awareness Fundraiser

A co-worker asked me to bake some cookies to help her fundraise for Cancer Awareness. Cancer has touched my family several times and I definitely wanted to help raise funds for the cure.

Each color ribbon represents a different type of cancer:
Black: Melanoma
Purple: Pancreatic
Gold: Childhood Cancers
Pink: Breast Cancer
Dark Blue: Colon Cancer.

Green with Luck!

I LOOOVVEEE the color green! Maybe it's because I'm a May baby so emeralds are my gem of choice but I just think green is the best color there is. Naturally, that means St. Patricks Day is one of my favorite holidays *insert huge smile*

As part of my green-ness, here are some St. Patrick Day cookies I baked up.

Later this week I'll have a tutorial on creating a custom Pot of Gold cookie.

The World through Cookie Glasses

Hi there! My name is Melissa and I loooovveeee baking and decorating cookies!

This whole adventure began late 2010/ early 2011. An old friend of mine who is in Culinary school posted some pictures on facebook of some sugar cookies she had decorated. I was immediately intrigued and asked her to give me some pointers. She sent me to Bridget over at Bake at 350 and Marian over at Sweetopia !

I took out my grandmother's old Kitchen Aid and the rest is history!

Typical of home bakers, I think, things started out slow as gifts for friends and family. Baking and cookie decorating have become a HUGE passion in my life and I'm now seeing the world through Cookie glasses!! ... like 'rose colored glasses'... get it?! *laugh* I know, I'm a cheeseball.

Stay tuned for more!

xoxo,
Mel
